Financial advice and help

Living with a life-limiting illness will affect the financial position of your family.

Seek independent expert advice early and before you make any decisions. Ask about:

  • Insurance – health, life and income protection
  • Superannuation
  • Tax rebates
  • Medical costs
  • Loss of income insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Medicare safety net thresholds
  • Flexible employment options
  • Centrelink benefits and concessions.

Early release of superannuation

The law allows for people with a terminal illness to access their superannuation early. This can occur when two doctors state in writing that the person’s illness is likely to result in their death within 24 months. Discuss this with your superannuation fund.

Other assistance

Electricity, gas, phone and water companies operate hardship programs. Speak to them about time payments and any concessions.
