Dr Norman Swan Interview
Referring to the ageing population and the increasing trend for people to die from chronic disease and age-related frailty, Dr Norman Swan highlighted the importance of palliative care as a core function for all health and aged care services. He said key challenges for the future are: to engage GPs much more effectively in palliative care; integrating palliative care into the broader health and aged care system; education and training of staff in palliative care; using evidence to guide practice; and extending the reach of palliative care through partnerships between specialist palliative care services and the broader health and aged care sectors.

Interview with Dr Rhonda Galbally
Describing our society as ‘death denying’, Dr Rhonda Galbally said that this is reflected in our treatment of people with disabilities, older people and people who are dying. She called for a much greater focus on promoting a healthy approach to death and dying in the education of GPs and all healthcare staff, accompanied by a much greater investment in palliative care. She said we need to move from away from the technocratic, medicalised approach to dying, recognising that it is a community responsibility and that people want to die in familiar places, in the company of people who care for them and without pain.

Death Won’t Be Denied: Why We Need a Revolution in Aged Care
Professor Abbey sits on the national Ministerial Dementia Advisory Committee, the South Australian Guardianship Board, consults to the aged care industry and holds adjunct academic positions in Brisbane, Hobart and Adelaide. She has a particular passion in the development of a palliative approach for people with dementia and ways to manage their pain well.
Professor Jenny Abbey Interview
Professor Abbey said an optimal approach to caring for people with dementia would be based on an acceptance that dementia is a terminal illness. She highlighted the importance of discussing how people with dementia wished to be cared for during the terminal stages of their illness with their families and while they still able to make informed decisions. Professor Abbey called for more education so that health workers and families of people with dementia have a greater understanding of how to ensure a comfortable death for people with dementia.
Professor Robinson has 20 years experience as an action researcher in the area of health services research. With a focus on aged care his research explores the translation of research findings into practice, developing evidence based nursing practice and facilitating care co-ordination.
Interview with Professor Andrew Robinson
Professor Robinson called for a major strategy, similar to Beyond Blue, to address the stigma associated with dementia. He said GPs are reluctant to diagnose dementia due to the stigma and the fact that there is currently no cure for this terminal condition. He said we should we should be using a palliative approach in caring for people with dementia; too many people dying from dementia undergo unnecessary invasive procedures within a few months of their death, he said.
