Visit to Goulburn Valley Hospice in Shepparton

Heike Fleischmann, PCV’s Volunteer Engagement & Capacity Building Manager, recently had the opportunity to visit Goulburn Valley Hospice (GV Hospice) and meet with some of their dedicated volunteers, as well as their Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator Maree Chin.

The new purpose-built facility provides a warm and inviting ambiance with beautiful artwork and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Since Maree assumed her role about two years ago, she has expanded the volunteer team from 8 to 30 members - a remarkable achievement. These volunteers serve in various roles including client care volunteers, OP Shop volunteers and acting as ambassadors.

During the visit Heike had the honour of spending time with five of the volunteers and was treated to a delightful afternoon tea, complete with a tray of award-winning vanilla slices to share with the PCV team. It was heartening to witness the camaraderie among the volunteers, some of whom are very experienced, while others are just finishing their training.

The volunteers graciously shared their stories with Heike. It was inspiring to hear how fulfilling they find their roles and the genuine care they exhibit. Their unwavering dedication is truly commendable.

The volunteers are always eager to lend a helping hand. In addition to the more long-term commitments, there are also opportunities for micro volunteering, such as assisting with the setup of the Christmas trees of remembrance in regional libraries. Community members are invited to write personal messages on a card to loved ones they have lost and then place the card on the tree.

Maree has implemented a recognition board in the staff room, where they document feedback from patients and families, praising the exceptional support and care provided by both volunteers and staff.

GV Hospice enjoys robust support from the community it serves, evident not only in the interest in volunteering but also in the success of their fundraisers dedicated to the cause.
