Hepburn Health Volunteer Biography Program
Four Volunteers commenced training for the Hepburn Health Beyond Words Volunteer Biography Program in February. Gene Hadfield and Maria Marco (pictured left) have completed their training and will commence Biography work with residents in the next week or so. Another two Biographers will attend their final training session in March.
About the Program
The Beyond Words Program is a new initiative for the Hepburn Health Service Volunteer Program which will see trained volunteer Biographers matched with residents in aged care facilities for the purpose of assisting them to write their Life Story or Biography. Volunteers will meet with the individual resident approximately 6-8 times to record their stories and then transcribe the sessions each week. Photos, letters and any other additions to the Biography will be scanned and included. At all times the resident is in control of the telling of their story and have the final say on what is or isn’t included in the completed Biography. The residents will then be presented with 2 bound copies and an electronic version of their completed Biography.
This is a very exciting new volunteer opportunity and the benefits for the residents in reminiscing and telling their story are immense. Their completed Biographies will then become tangible family history for future generations.
A growing team
A second intake of Biographers will be trained in the coming months with further intakes later in the year. The growing Biography Team will meet regularly to share ideas and experiences and will provide mentoring and support to each other.
Congratulations Gene and Maria! We look forward to seeing the first completed Biographies within the next two or three months.
