Celebrating 30 Years of Compassionate Support: Chinese Cancer and Chronic Illness Society Marks a Significant Milestone

The Chinese Cancer and Chronic Illness Society of Victoria (CCCIS) recently celebrated 30 years of dedicated service to people affected by cancer and chronic illness within Chinese communities.

The anniversary was marked with a Charity Concert – a celebration that brought together clients and their families, volunteers, healthcare professionals, community leaders and supporters to reflect on the Society's remarkable journey over the past three decades. It was an opportunity to acknowledge the vision, commitment and generosity of those who have helped build an organisation that has become a trusted source of information, support and advocacy for thousands of individuals and families.

At the heart of the Society's success has been its founder and manager (Pro bono), Dorothy Yiu OAM JP. Dorothy established the Society in 1996 in response to the need for culturally and linguistically appropriate support for Chinese people affected by cancer. Over the past three decades, she has dedicated her career to improving the health and wellbeing of Chinese communities, championing culturally responsive care, advocating for greater awareness of palliative care and end-of-life planning, and ensuring that people facing serious illness receive compassionate, practical support. In recognition of her outstanding contribution, Dorothy was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2016.

Since its establishment, CCCIS has played a vital role in reducing barriers to care by providing culturally appropriate education, support services and community connections. Through its programs and partnerships, the Society has empowered people living with illness to make informed decisions, navigate complex healthcare systems and access the support they need in their own language and within a culturally familiar environment.

A highlight of the anniversary celebration was the launch of the Society's new commemorative book ‘Heart to Heart, Hand in Hand’, which chronicles the history of the organisation and honours the many people whose dedication has shaped its success. The publication reflects not only on the Society's achievements, but also on the resilience of the communities it serves and the countless stories of hope, courage and mutual support that have emerged over the past 30 years.

The anniversary is not only a celebration of past achievements but also a reminder of the continuing importance of culturally responsive approaches to health, palliative care and community wellbeing. As Australia's population becomes increasingly diverse, organisations such as the Chinese Cancer and Chronic Illness Society continue to demonstrate the value of trusted community leadership in improving access to information, care and support.

Palliative Care Victoria extends its warm congratulations to the Chinese Cancer and Chronic Illness Society on reaching this significant milestone. We also congratulate Dorothy Yiu OAM JP, whose exceptional leadership and lifelong commitment have left an enduring mark on the health and wellbeing of Chinese communities across Victoria, and on the publication of the Society's commemorative book.

We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Society and to working together to improve awareness and understanding of palliative care and end-of-life issues within culturally and linguistically diverse communities. We wish the CCCIS every success as it embarks on the next chapter of its important work, continuing to support individuals, families and communities with compassion, dignity and hope.
