Recently, 20 leaders of volunteers from across Victoria came together for the fully booked workshop, The Volunteer Cycle Reimagined: Lead, Inspire, Demonstrate Impact, facilitated by Tracey O’Neill.
Designed specifically for leaders of palliative care volunteers, the engaging in-person workshop explored how the future of volunteering is not about doing more, but about reimagining how organisations attract, engage, and retain volunteers who make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families.
Through practical strategies, reflective discussions, and collaborative activities, participants explored how to attract the right people, create meaningful volunteer experiences, and foster long-term retention. A strong focus was also placed on measuring and communicating the impact of volunteering in ways that resonate with stakeholders and decision-makers.

Importantly, the workshop acknowledged the realities faced by many leaders of volunteers. Often working as a “one person show”, many participants reflected on the loneliness and pressure that can come with balancing multiple responsibilities while trying to provide meaningful support to volunteers within limited time and resources. The workshop addressed recognising and responding to burnout, while encouraging leaders to lead with courage, compassion, and values.
Participants left with fresh insights, practical frameworks, and renewed confidence to influence positive change within their organisations and future proof palliative care volunteering.
