Press Release - National Palliative Care Week 2023

Palliative Care Victoria to shine light on ‘Matters of Life and Death’ during National Palliative Care

19 May 2023

National Palliative Care Week is the nation’s largest annual initiative to raise awareness about palliative care and its benefits.

Running from 21 to 27 May, National Palliative Care Week 2023 (NPCW 23) aims to put ‘Matters of life and death’ front and centre in Australia’s consciousness and recognise the people at the heart of quality palliative care.

As part of NPCW 23, Palliative Care Victoria will be co-hosting a screening of ‘Live the life you please’ with Spiritual Health Association at the Palace Kino, Collins St, on 23 May.

The film follows the experiences of Australians of all ages and different stages of disease, in a variety of geographic locations, cultural, socio-economic, and personal circumstances. It is a powerful and moving portrayal of the importance of compassionate care for those with a life-limiting illness.

‘Live the life you please’ shows the importance of palliative care to the community, and sets the bar for what quality palliative care could look like for all Victorians.

This exciting event is to be launched by Deputy Secretary for Commissioning System Improvement (CSI) in Department of Health Victoria, Louise McKinlay. Following the screening, Dr Stephen Duckett, Grattan Institute, will host a panel discussion with experts in palliative care and spiritual health who appeared in the film.

Violet Platt, Chief Executive Officer at Palliative Care Victoria says, “This years National Palliative Care Week provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of the work of Victoria’s palliative care workforce. They are a highly skilled group of professionals and volunteers, who are welcomed into the family environment to provide care to the community during what is often their most difficult time.”

There are a host of events across Victoria and Australia as part of NPCW 23, including further screenings of ‘Live the life you please’, education and information sessions. A full list of Victorian events and activities can be found on the Palliative Care Victoria website.
