Media Release – New multilingual resources launched to support decision making in aged care

For many families from multicultural backgrounds, navigating end-of-life decisions in aged care can be especially complex. Language barriers, cultural differences, and uncertainty about roles and rights can leave family decision-makers feeling overwhelmed and unsupported.

Palliative Care Victoria (PCV) is proud to launch translated versions of its recently published resource, Being Prepared as a Family Decision Maker – a practical guide designed to support families caring for loved ones in residential aged care who can no-longer make decisions for themselves.

The booklet, originally developed from the Dignified and Respectful Decisions project (jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments, as part of the Comprehensive Palliative Care in Aged Care Measure) is now available in 10 languages. The newly released translations include:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese (Simplified)
  • Chinese (Traditional)
  • Greek
  • Italian
  • Macedonian
  • Somali
  • Spanish
  • Turkish
  • Vietnamese

Developed in collaboration with multicultural organisations and community members, the resource has been carefully translated and adapted to reflect experiences, values and imagery of Victoria’s diverse community. This ensures the content is both culturally appropriate, and resonant for those who need it most.

PCV Community Engagement Manager, Tonina Gucciardo-Masci spoke of the value of the resource to communities across Victoria. "These booklets are more than just translations – they are meaningful tools designed to empower families from all backgrounds with knowledge and confidence during life’s most challenging times".

To mark the release, PCV is hosting a launch event at the Darebin Arts Centre on Thursday, 22 May 2025, bringing together sector representatives, multicultural partners, and members of the community to celebrate inclusive and compassionate care.

This launch reflects PCV’s commitment to ensuring that every person – regardless of culture or language, can have access to the information and support they need to prepare for end-of-life care with dignity.
