Summary

Melbourne City Mission Palliative Care (MCMPC) supports people with a terminal illness living at home in the cities of Hume, Merri-bek, Darebin, and Yarra. Palliative care volunteers build relationships and provide support to clients and carers through companionship, respite, practical assistance, transport, or bereavement support. Some volunteers also choose to undertake additional training to provide hand/foot massage, or Life Story writing.

Selection Criteria

Any adult can apply, however palliative care volunteering involves dealing with death and dying, so it’s not for everyone. We encourage applications from people with additional languages, and from all cultural backgrounds. Our volunteers share a common generosity of spirit, emotional maturity, and a willingness to help clients and carers living with a terminal illness.

The qualities we look for in palliative care volunteers include:

  • a non-judgemental attitude understanding and acceptance of other peoples’ beliefs and values
  • willingness to listen and ‘be present’
  • willingness to work within the prescribed volunteer/client role boundaries

Induction training is a mandatory part of the recruitment process to join our palliative care team.
The 2023 training program is over four full days – 13, 15, 20 & 22 June – 9:30am to 3:30pm each day.
