Summary

The Victorian Palliative Care Advice Service (PCAS) is a free and confidential phone-based service, supporting all Victorians to access expert advice support and guidance when living with or caring for someone with life-limiting illness, palliative, or end-of-life care.

PCAS is a specialist nurse led service, supported by the consultants of the Parkville Integrated Palliative Care Service to deliver timely and effective support to all clinicians and the Victorian public. The goal of PCAS is to enhance palliative and end-of-life care for all Victorians, especially in regional and rural areas of the state.

About the role
  • Part time Fixed Term Role
  • Assist clinicians and the Victorian community navigating all aspects of life-limiting illness, palliative care, end-of-life care.
  • Work in a dynamic team, where there is genuine support, care, and connect.
  • A key liaison role in providing high quality and evidence-based advice to the Victorian community and clinicians who contact the Palliative Care Advice Service
  • A pivotal role in assisting people to find the right help, whilst remaining calm and facilitating timely and efficient support and direction
  • Utilising your expert palliative care skills to autonomously navigate clinical scenarios and refer through to the consultant when required
  • Delivery of advice that is kind, clear, and concise
Selection Criteria

The person we are looking for:

  • You are an expert in the speciality of palliative care and have an extensive knowledge of the Victorian healthcare system and its funding streams
  • You have a strong passion for improving outcomes for all Victorians who are living with life-limiting illness, palliative care or end-of-life care or supporting those who do
  • You are an AHPRA registered nurse with formal qualifications in palliative care, and a robust work history that can demonstrate an expert knowledge of systems beyond one field
  • You are a strong communicator and are an apt problem solver, who is not afraid to look for a solution outside the box
  • You can work autonomously, yet collaborate well with the team
  • You are proficient with computer systems and have access to reliable internet

Essential: 

  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • Post Graduate qualifications in Palliative Care
  • Registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Police Check & Working with Children Check
  • Extensive work history in the specialty of palliative care within community, inpatient, and outpatient settings
  • Expert knowledge of the Victorian healthcare system and experience within different service delivery models
  • Proven experience working in an environment that requires strict adherence to the legislation of procedures, protocols including records management, handling of personal information, confidentiality, and privacy.
  • Proficient in the ability to triage and interpret information and communicate complex medical information into plain language for non-clinicians.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written communication, and liaison skills, together with the ability to work in close consultation with a wide range of cultures, languages, and demographics.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously yet pivot to work collaboratively as a member of the team in a challenging and sensitive work environment with competing priorities and inflexible deadlines.
  • Initiate, support and participate in quality improvement and research activities.

Competency with Microsoft Office 365, Excel and Word as well as previous experience in phone-based delivery systems is also desirable.
