Education for Aged Care

Palliative Care education specifically designed for aged care professionals builds the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to provide high quality care at the end of someone's life. The resources outlined below are all FREE government programs available to healthcare professionals and service providers. Comprehensive education programs

Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach (PEPA)

PEPA for Aged Care offer reverse placements for residential aged care services. During these placements, a specialist palliative care nurse with experience working in aged care, comes to a service and works alongside the staff, providing face to face education and workshops. Their training is designed to be flexible to align specifically with the organizations unique learning needs and in some instances, additional government funding is available for services to support a placement.

End of Life Directions for Aged Care (ELDAC)

ELDAC support Residential Aged Care Services, Homecare Services and Primary Care Providers. Their resources include structured education modules, toolkits for implementation and connecting services with their local palliative care resources through their Linkages program. The ELDAC Care Model is used by PEPA Aged Care to develop staff’s knowledge of palliative care.

Palliative Care Curriculum for Undergraduates (PCC4U)

Palliative Care Curriculum for Undergraduates (PCC4U) provides open-access resources aimed at improving palliative care knowledge and skills for students. They provide undergraduate training for nurses, doctors and allied health professionals as well as Continuous Professional Development modules for staff. There are also modules designed for people enrolled in Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses including enrolled nursing and care work, mapped to their core competencies.

Targeted Palliative Care Programs

Palliative Aged Care Outcomes Program 

PACOP provides a Standardized Assessment Framework for identifying and managing palliative care needs within residential aged care. Staff are provided resources and training on how to complete each assessment tool, enhancing their capacity to deliver quality palliative care. The tools themselves also compliment the ELDAC model of care. Information collected through these assessments can be used to generate reports and benchmarking data to inform continuous quality improvement initiatives within facilities.

Dementia Training Australia

The National Dementia Education and Training Standards Framework has been developed to support a more consistent and comprehensive approach to knowledge and skill development for supporting people living with dementia, their carers and families. It sets out the recommended standards for knowledge and skills across a core range of dementia learning domains and learning tiers included a dedicated module on end-of-life care.

Gwandalan

The Gwandalan project offers a suite of tailored education and training materials to support cultural safety within palliative care services. These include a series of e-learning modules and interactive resources that cover various aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture. Topics include cultural protocols associated with death, dying and cultural safety, communication techniques, advance care planning, and community engagement.

End of Life Law for Clinicians

End of Life Law for Clinicians is a training program designed to enhance clinicians (doctors, nurses, paramedics, and allied health workers) understanding of the legal aspects related to palliative and end-of-life care. This includes navigating complex decisions, understanding patients' rights, consent, advance care planning, and the legalities surrounding the withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment.

LGBTIQ+ Health Palliative Care Project

LGBTIQ+ Health have developed an e-learning package comprised of four self-directed modules designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of health professionals to deliver safe, affirming  and inclusive palliative and end-of-life care. The modules address the barriers and enablers LGBTIQ+ individuals can experience when engaging with health services and offer guidance on end-of-life planning conversations.

Model of Palliative Care for People with Intellectual Disability

The Tailored Model of Palliative Care for People with Intellectual Disability was developed by the Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry (3DN) at UNSW Sydney. This is a comprehensive framework adaptable across various healthcare settings, that ensures palliative care services are inclusive and responsive to the unique needs of people with intellectual disabilities. The model includes two comprehensive toolkits to support implementation – one for health professionals and one for people with intellectual disability and their supporters.

palliAGED

palliAGED is a comprehensive, evidence-based online hub of resources designed to support palliative care in the Australian aged care sector. It offers practical guidance, tools, and information for health and care practitioners, as well as for older Australians, their families, and carers. Their resources include practice tip sheets, e-learning modules for continuous professional development and evidence summaries of current research on key palliative care topics.

PaCE is a comprehensive, web-based application designed to support health and aged care professionals in accessing quality palliative care education resources across Australia. All resources within the app are freely available and align with the national palliative care priorities. Their extensive resource library houses a wide array of high-quality educational materials, including online modules, toolkits, webinars, and printable guides.

Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet: Palliative Care Portal

This portal is a dedicated online resource designed to support healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities in delivering culturally appropriate palliative and end-of-life care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It includes information on important cultural practices and beliefs, guidance on initiating “advance care yarning” and educational material developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals discussing their perspectives on palliative care.
